11 Fun and Free Summer Activities for the Entire Family
The sun is shining, the birds are singing, and the lemonade is refreshing. Oh, it's summertime! It's rooftop bar season, water sports season, and picnic season. It is also FOMO season. Yes, there are so many options for fun outings that it can be overwhelming.
As a result, we've compiled a list of the top 11 fun and FREE summertime activities available almost anywhere.
1. Live music!
Summer is the season of free concerts, whether it's jazz, hip-hop, or world beats. Local options include parks, city squares, music venues, and beer gardens.
2. Bike riding
Biking is a great way to see different communities from a different perspective. It's also interesting, safe, and saves money on transportation. Find new bike routes that will satisfy your senses by taking you through parks, rivers, bridges, fascinating neighbourhoods, community gardens, and other sights.
3. Theater and Movies
Many cities will host free film and theater festivals during the summer months. There's nothing like watching a film under the stars, whether it's Shakespeare or Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Pack a blanket and a bottle of wine, and maybe even call a friend or two for the ultimate experience.
4. Beach beach beach
The beach is possibly our favorite option! Go alone with a good book, or bring a friend- the beach will accept you either way. Remember to bring some watermelon and a hat!
5. Sports
Whether it's baseball, frisbee, or volleyball, now is the time to enjoy some good old-fashioned outdoor sports. Find a new weekly group to join or contact an old friend you haven't seen in a long time.
6. Farming and gardening
Getting your hands dirty is good for your mind, body, and soul, and it may also be a fun way to meet new people. If you live in a city, look for a community garden (or, even better, start one!) Check out a nearby farm or start your own veggie patch if you live closer to the fields. Don't forget to stay hydrated!
7. Hiking and camping
Nature, how beautiful you are (sorry, my mind must be at Shakespeare in the Park). There is certainly nothing more beautiful than nature, so now is the perfect time to get a taste of it. Get out, have fun, and leave no garbage behind, whether it's a day trip to a local forest or a river camping trip with your childhood friends or your new in-laws.
8. Arts and crafts
The summer provides us with new opportunities to create arts and crafts that are geared toward the outdoors. Consider bird feeders, mosquito nets with a twist, dream catchers, or dried herbal bouquets to hang on your front porch. We recommend repurposing obsolete materials and upcycling them into new products.
9. Help out at a local farmers market.
I can't think of a better way to meet new people. Farmers markets are friendly little enclaves. I'm not sure if it's the organic fruit, the homemade ice cream, or the free samples, but everyone feels more at ease at a farmers market.
10. The joy of lemonade
How about free lemonade giveaways to strangers instead of a lemonade stand? The heat can make us all grumpy at times, but free lemonade will brighten anyone's day—guaranteed! At the farmer's market, you might even be able to get some lemons for free (or a local supermarket). Add mint and a sweetener for an extra boost of joy.
11. Gathering around a fire with mates
We come together around bonfires. Guitars, beers, and marshmallows are all welcome. Invite the new neighbors over to hear what wild things they have to tell.
