8-year-old boy unknowingly spends Php100K on mobile games using parents’ debit card
In just two days, an eight-year-old boy from Davao City unknowingly spent over Php 100,000 on mobile games using his parents' debit card.
Julmar, the child's mother and the owner of a consulting firm, revealed in a viral Facebook post on Wednesday that she was shocked to discover the charges when she tracked her finance team's bank statements.
“I was furious,” Julmar admitted on Thursday. She claimed that the Google Play app on her husband's old phone, which they gave to their son for Christmas last year, was still linked to the card.
“They were only allowed 2 hours of tech time per day (max), and the only apps they could use were SuperBook, Messenger for Kids, and War Robots,” the mom explained.
“Later, I discovered that I believe the purchases were still in the War Robots, but that he also downloaded other games that were suggested or promoted within the War Robots.”
Julma stated that her son enjoyed mobile games and aspired to become a robotics teacher in the future.
“He explained that he required gems to upgrade his robots as well as new hangers for his robots. He thought those options were all free, so he took them,” she explained.
Julmar stated that her son received "some spanking" for downloading more games without permission.
“He was deeply sorry” (and was too cute with those irresistible eyes). We explained that they are more valuable than all the money in the world, but adhering to rules is also a good life skill to have,” she said.
“Does learning that the purchase price is P100,000 alter our feelings toward our children? No way. Again, we know our children and our parenting better than anyone else. This is a blatant error (he thought all the downloads are free). We believe in them, and they respond to discipline with a fear of God in their hearts,” she added.
“After the incident, we moved on as a family. We're just surprised that this learning experience as a family has piqued the interest of others.”
Julmar stated that they had added parental controls and passwords for purchases to prevent further surprise charges. They also requested a refund, which has yet to be credited to their account as of this writing.
