The Best Steam Games for 2021
While the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch are all outstanding home video game consoles, there are occasions when playing on a PC is preferable. Platform-exclusive games, free online play, and console ports with often superior audio and video quality are all available. A strong and active mod community also adds to the platform's appeal. If you're a PC gamer—or aspire to be one—Steam, a digital platform with thousands of titles, is the best place to start looking for games.
So, how do you navigate the plethora of games available in Valve's store? Don't worry, we've taken care of it. Here you'll find games that have won PCMag's prestigious Editors' Choice award. If you're looking for a hot new shooter, an exciting fantasy RPG, or a mind-boggling strategy game, our list is sure to have something for you.
Of course, this is only the beginning; for a much more in-depth look, check out our roundup of the best PC games, the vast majority of which are available on Steam.
Dota 2 (for PC)
Dota 2, the esports classic, is the epitome of easy to learn, challenging to master. You must choose one of more than 100 playable Heroes to take to the battlefield in this free-to-play multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game, and use the character's unique skills, play style, and attributes to help your team win.
Dota 2 might lack Paragon's graphical flair and Smite's numerous unique play modes, but it is Steam's best and most balanced MOBA.
Gears Tactics (for PC)
Traditional Gears of War games are cover-based shooters that place you in the shoes of muscled soldiers defending civilization against the Locust mutant horde. The series incorporates grotesque weapons like chainsaw assault rifles and spear-tipped rifles into the third-person shooting action, which can be used to brawl or blast the Locust Horde into bloody lumps.
Surprisingly, Gears Tactics—the franchise's first foray into the turn-based strategy genre—retains many of the series' hallmarks, such as wild melee attacks, cover-heavy environments, and waves of overly violent enemies. The latest tactical elements, on the other hand, add to the action in a beautifully designed way.
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (for PC)
In Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, Big Boss, the world's greatest soldier, returns to the battlefield after a nine-year coma. As you help Big Boss sate his thirst for vengeance against the villainous Skull Face, you scout, sneak, and battle your way through military installations in Afghanistan and Africa.
In terms of gameplay, you navigate two vast open-world worlds while building the notorious Mother Base, kidnapping and recruiting soldiers from the field, looting precious resources, and developing new weapons. Phantom Pain is an exciting stealth-action game, but it has had a rocky development in some regions.
Monster Hunter World (for PC)
Even Monster Hunter's most ardent fans agreed until recently that the game has a certain amount of jankiness to it, a jankiness that has put off many casual players. Capcom improved animations, simplified gameplay, and made a slew of other quality-of-life tweaks with Monster Hunter World.
The reforms had a significant effect. It's a blast tracking down and battling massive, snarling beasts with a variety of designed armor and weapons, particularly with friends in multiplayer mode.
Ori and the Will of the Wisps (for PC)
Microsoft is best known for its realistic games featuring space marines and fast vehicles, but it does sometimes release family-friendly, mascot-driven platformers. Ori and the Will of the Wisps is a perfect example of the above.
Will of the Wisps, the sequel to Ori and the Blind Forest, impresses with more timeless polish and art. The game features a darkly beautiful environment packed with thought-provoking stages, as well as the ability to travel through them with unrivaled grace.
Red Dead Redemption 2 (for PC)
The sequel to Red Dead Redemption is a bloody tale about the end of the Old West.
You are in command. Arthur Morgan is a member of an outlaw gang who has become disillusioned with the criminal lifestyle. Even now, Arthur can't imagine himself doing anything but cheating and murdering. This conflict propels the story forward and launches a slew of action-packed missions.
Red Dead Redemption 2 amazes on PC, despite some performance problems. Its captivating plot, stunning graphics, plethora of optional quests, and constantly updated online mode can keep you hooked for years.
Super Mega Baseball 3 (for PC)
Metalhead Software's newest baseball game captures what makes the sport so popular around the world, immersing you in a world where home runs fly, cartoony showboats flex their super-sized biceps, and pitcher-batter matchups are competitive cat-and-mouse games.
Super Mega Baseball 3 adds a slew of new on-field features, strategy-enhancing player characteristics, and gameplay modes for both default and custom ball clubs, propelling the series even further into simulation territory. Despite some minor frame rate problems and other minor flaws, Super Mega Baseball 3 is the best game in the series so far and an excellent Steam title.
Tekken 7 (for PC)
Tekken 7, like the previous main-line Tekken games, is about fathers and sons attempting to kill each other in order to rid the Mishima clan of the Devil Gene, a magical DNA bit that turns certain people into hell spawn. Tekken 7, billed as the culmination of the Mishima saga, unlocks mysteries and leaves cliffhangers, addressing long-standing questions while also prompting new ones from the fan base.
Thankfully, the hilarious story is supported by some of the best mechanics in modern fighting games, with the latest Power Crush, Rage Arts, and Rage Drive attacks seamlessly fitting into the existing mix.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (for PC)
Geralt grips his blades one last time in The Witcher 3: Wild Quest in search of Ciri, his surrogate daughter. The third mainline Witcher game was one of the best RPGs ever developed thanks to the game design techniques used by developer CD Projekt Red.
Improved spell-casting skills, easier evasion, and stronger item-crafting abilities make fighting more intuitive than before. Wild Hunt also has a ridiculously large game world with strong guns, valuable collectible materials, labyrinthine dungeons, and a plethora of monsters to kill. It's well-written, and the voice work is outstanding.
